Legend has it that Gargantua, passing through La Canourgue, forgot his shoe there. It has a height of about thirty meters. Upstream from the village of La Canourgue, this valley owes its originality to the presence of a succession of dolomitic peaks, limestone cliffs, caves and natural arches. These escarpments emerging in the heart of wooded vegetation (Scots pines and white oaks) have a remarkable landscape interest. Rock formations and cliffs are favored nesting sites for rock birds (peregrine falcon, eagle owl, chough, black kite, red kite, short-toed eagle). The Urugne valley is one of the main wintering sites for the Greater Horseshoe Bat. Source: DREAL Languedoc-Roussillon, April 2007.
