LA MALÈNE

Located in the heart of the Gorges du Tarn, the village experienced difficult times during the Revolution, the rocks still bear the scars, witnesses of the fires that ravaged the village. La Malène is best known for its boatmen who introduce you to the magnificent gorges of the Tarn. The main places and monuments of the village are: the manor of Malène which dates from the 15th century (Louis XII ordered the razing of the rebel fortresses but thanks to the services rendered by a lord of Gévaudan, the castle was spared. It has since been transformed into a hotel ). There is also the 12th century Romanesque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, listed as a Historic Monument since 1928, and the ruins of Castel Merlet, the oldest known castle in France.
