CHATEAU SAINT PIERRE

A private castle visible only from the outside : from the Saint André de Lancize road at the start of the Mulet Grisou trail. Château Saint-Pierre, or Château de Calberte , is located in Saint-Germain-de-Calberte in the heart of the Lozère Cévennes. Perched at an altitude of 410 meters on a rocky outcrop, it overlooks the Gardon River, making it difficult to capture. First mentioned in 1092, the "castrum de Calberte" was abandoned at the end of the 14th century. It consists of a rectangular main building adjoining a square keep, a chapel, a round tower, and five outbuildings, surrounded by a deserted medieval village. Its medieval structures are well preserved. Since the 1960s, it has been given a new lease on life by a family of enthusiasts who have restored a large part of it. It has been the subject of archaeological excavations and remains a true historical landmark of medieval history.
