The Natura 2000 organisation

This lands covers 37% of the surface area of Lozère, i.e. a total of 20 sites in the département.

Each Natura 2000 site selected as a site of Community interest by the European Commission is monitored by a Steering Committee. This Committee ensures the implementation of a document of objectives which includes an ecological inventory, a socio-economic inventory and the resulting management document.

Implementation of the objectives document and management of the site are entrusted to a local authority with joint financial support from the State and Europe. In Lozère, all the sites are managed by communities of communes (apart from 3 sites managed directly by the Cévennes National Park).

Coordination of the sites includes actions programmed annually, covering :

  • Studying and monitoring the state of conservation of the habitats and species of Community interest identified on the site;
  • setting up contracts in agricultural or forestry environments, contracts that are neither agricultural nor forestry-based (development of roofs for bats, restoration of Lavognes, etc.);
  • communicating with local stakeholders: newsletter, website, awareness-raising campaigns, writing informative or popular articles.

In the heart of Lozère
Le Valdonnez

The Valdonnez was proposed as a Site of Community Interest in 2006 because it is home to a remarkable example of a petrifying spring. However, this is far from being the site’s only interest:

  • Area: 5,010 hectares.
  • 14 listed natural habitats
  • 9 animal species of Community interest.
    • And 9 heritage bird species
  • 6 remarkable plant species on the scale of the Languedoc-Roussillon region or the national territory.
  • High diversity of species belonging to various groups: odonates, amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

The French government is expected to designate it as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) by ministerial decree in the near future.

The cliffs of Barjac and the Causse des Blanquets are located on the edge of the limestone advances of the Causses (to the south) on the crystalline massif of Aubrac and Margeride (to the north of the Lot). This area, where two major geological regions meet, boasts a highly diverse biotope.

The Falaises de Barjac and Causse des Blanquets Natura 2000 sites were designated Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) by ministerial decree in 2006 and 2011.

The Plateau de Charpal site, which includes a number of peat bogs and moorlands, became part of the Natura 2000 programme in 2004. The Charpal plateau is largely wooded, but it has retained an exceptional concentration of peat bogs (a complex of priority habitats), including the largest in Lozère, covering up to 25 ha.

  • Surface area: 3,410 ha
  • 8 habitats of Community interest,
  • 7 species of Community interest, including the most emblematic: the European otter.
