PHARMACIE DE L'ANCIEN HOPITAL

The pharmacy was established between 1859 and 1862 within the Mende General Hospital, itself founded in 1678 by Count-Bishop Monseigneur de Piencourt .
It remained in operation until 1973, when the hospital moved to the new complex on the Chaldecoste slope of Mende.
For 20 years, the room served as a storage area. In 1998, the former hospital was converted into a residence for independent seniors, and the old pharmacy became an activity and recreation room.
In 2017, the decision was taken to close this space for conservation purposes, followed by a complete restoration campaign which was completed at the end of 2019.
During this work, two adjoining rooms were converted into a museum space presenting the history of the hospitals of Mende as well as sculptures from the former chapel.

Nowadays, during guided tours , you can discover a collection of over 250 jars displayed in their original walnut and glass cases , along with examples of utensils and equipment used in preparing remedies, as well as some exquisitely crafted pieces.
All of the objects on display, and there are many, are original .
This makes the pharmacy of the former Mende hospital one of the 10 most beautiful 19th-century pharmacies in France .

Please note: This site is only open to the public during guided tours (organized several times a week during the summer and school holidays, and by reservation outside of peak season).
