This marriage may suggest that Cougoussac was a Protestant place of worship. The first war of religion (1562-1563) was stopped by the edict of Amboise on March 19, 1563. Consequently François Calvet de Cheminade and his wife Gabrielle could practice their confession in their castle. In the year 1585 the castle was taken by the Catholic garrison of Mende, François Calvet de Fontanilles was murdered. His daughter Marie married a Catholic lord in 1587. Following the Wars of Religion Marie decided to build a chapel. The last descendant of the family, childless, sold the estate in 1849. Since 1906 the château has belonged to the Rousset family. In 1986, Mr. Rousset obtained the classification of the site as a Historic Monument.
